Banya No. 1 - London

Discover the history of Russian bathhouses in Hoxton, an area in the London Borough of Hackney, England and witness the revitalizing rituals of Banya No.1, where superheated steam and fragrant veniks create an unforgettable wellness experience.

Delve into the captivating world of the Russian banya, a tradition with deep roots that has found a vibrant revival in the heart of London at Banya No.1. Interestingly, London once had a thriving banya scene in the late 19th century, with at least five Russian bathhouses opened by Jewish immigrants seeking refuge from Russian pogroms. Though the last of these closed in 1943, the spirit of this ancient practice was rekindled with the opening of Banya No.1 in 2012.

While sharing the Nordic cycle of hot, cold, rest, and repeat with saunas, the banya offers a distinct experience. The temperature in a banya typically ranges from 60 to 70 degrees Celsius, or 140 - 158°F - lower than a sauna, but the humidity is significantly higher. However, the most significant difference lies in the steam itself. At Banya No.1, the steam is superheated, emanating from a massive furnace with cast iron heated to an intense 700 degrees Celsius (1292°F). This creates a unique and enveloping heat. The inspiration for this invigorating cycle can be found in experiences like those in Gestalt, Switzerland, where the contrast between intense heat and icy cold plunges creates an unparalleled sense of well-being.

Central to the banya experience at Banya No. 1 is the ritual of "parenie." This involves the use of "veniks" – fragrant bundles of leafy twigs such as oak, birch, and eucalyptus. Although their use isn’t simply for fragrance; they are skillfully used to shift the superheated steam around the body. The primary goal of the banya is to deeply heat the body, preparing it for the invigorating plunge pool. This thermal journey is an immersive and guided experience, yet one that respects individual pace and preference. It's about stepping outside your comfort zone, which often leads to a truly memorable and profound experience, with each visit offering deeper sensations and benefits.

The banya is an age-old tradition in Russia and brings with it traditional experience that sets it apart from modern spas in luxury hotel settings. As the saying goes, "everything new is well-forgotten old," and Banya No.1 believes this perfectly encapsulates the banya's resurgence. Their mission is to bring this powerful tradition into the mainstream of wellness and spa culture, not only in London but across the globe. They envision a future where the revitalizing and therapeutic benefits of the banya are accessible to all.
